Which Vaccines Are Right for Your Puppy?

When you get a puppy, you have to make sure that you get each vaccination that puppies need. There are several that are very important for puppies to get to keep them free from serious diseases. Our veterinarians will administer the right puppy vaccines so that your pet will be protected. If you live in Reisterstown, Owings Mills, or the surrounding areas, contact TLC for Pets to make an appointment with one of our veterinarians. Let’s take a look at some of the vaccinations that keep canines safe.

Parvovirus

There are four main vaccinations for puppies that are considered the core vaccinations. These include a shot to prevent parvovirus, which is a virus that is highly contagious among dogs. It causes problems with the gastrointestinal system. When a puppy contracts this virus, it will typically have serious diarrhea that can cause dehydration and be fatal. It can also cause a fever, vomiting, and loss of appetite. There is no cure for this virus, so prevention is key.

Distemper

This is another virus that can attack puppies and lead to serious health problems or even death. It is spread through coughing and sneezing as well as through shared food and water bowls. It can cause coughing, diarrhea, paralysis, seizures, vomiting, and is often fatal. There is no cure for this illness.

Rabies

Rabies is an extremely contagious and deadly virus that can spread to any mammal. It causes headaches, drooling, anxiety, and eventually death. There is no cure, but vaccinations are highly effective.

Adenovirus

There are two types of this condition; hepatitis and kennel cough. The hepatitis version can be extremely serious and leave dogs with long-term adverse health conditions.
