Puppy and Kitten Care
Caring for the Unique Needs of Puppies and Kittens
Here at TLC For Pets, tender loving care is the name of our game. More than other pets, baby animals need a little extra TLC from their owners and veterinary care providers. We are happy to help you through the process of raising a new pet and provide helpful recommendations for keeping your puppy or kitten healthy as it adjusts to new life in your home.
We believe that pet health is built on a foundation of wellness and prevention. That starts with frequent examinations and check-ups to ensure your pet is growing in a healthy way. We recommend bringing your puppy or kitten in for a first visit no later than age 6 to 8 weeks, though it is never too late for a check-up if this window has passed. During this time, we will check your pet for any underlying healthy problems and counsel you on at-home care, hygiene and diet.
One of the most important needs of a puppy or kitten is proper nutrition. As they grow and develop, young pets need a diet that supports strong bones, healthy teeth and excess energy. Our team is happy to recommend foods that deliver all of the essential nutrients and protein that are important during the first year of life. We can also provide tips for ensuring your puppy or kitten is getting adequate physical exercise and mental stimulation – both of which are key to healthy growth and development.
Puppy and Kitten Vaccinations in Reisterstown
Another important step to protecting your new pet is getting all of the necessary vaccinations. Like humans, pets are vulnerable to a wide range of diseases, some of which can be fatal. Immunizations help protect against many of these diseases and give your puppy or kitten a healthy start on life. Vaccines differ for dogs versus cats, with puppies typically getting a series of shots that protect against rabies, bordatella, distemper, parvovirus, para-influenza and more. Cats are also vaccinated against rabies, as well as feline leukemia, feline distemper and a variety of feline respiratory diseases.
Other preventive and wellness procedures are also offered at our office. One of the most popular services we offer for pets and their owners is micro-chipping, which helps track a pet that has been separated from its home or owner. Microchips are implanted under your pet’s skin and contain information, including the owner’s phone number and address. Many lost pets have been returned to their homes thanks to microchips. We also recommend talking with your veterinarian about spaying and neutering, which is often performed during the first year of life.
