EXPANDED DENTAL CARE

TLC for Pets has always emphasized the importance of dental care for overall health and pain management.  In 2009 and 2010, we have added digital dental radiography and a higher speed dental drill.  Since our patients can\'t always tell us where they hurt, dental x-rays are useful in finding problems before they surface.  With our improved dental operatory, we can deal with some of those earlier stage problems better as well.  We strive for happy pets with pleasant odor-free mouths.

DOG FLU UPDATE

What is dog flu?

Dog flu is a relatively new influenza virus that affects dogs. (H3N8)

Are pet flu viruses contagious to people?

Dog flu is not believed to affect humans at all.  Other than 1 cat with swine flu, the human seasonal flu and swine flu are not known to affect dogs and cats.

Why is dog flu a hot topic right now?

Dog flu is now becoming a problem in our area. As a contagious disease that can be deadly but can also be controlled through vaccinations, it is important to be aware of the virus.

How much of a problem is dog flu in our area?

There have been outbreaks in the Washington area, Pennsylvania and Delaware.  It is very likely that the Baltimore area will be affected soon.

What are the symptoms?

Dog flu can resemble other kennel cough diseases in its mildest form (hacking cough)  but can cause more severe illness as well.  If your dog has a cough or other illness, please call for an appointment.

Can it really be deadly?

Yes.  We have mixed information on how deadly it can be, but the concept is similar to swine flu.  Dogs do not have natural immunity to this new disease.

Tell me about the vaccine.

The vaccine was released this past summer and is believed to be reasonably safe and effective.  TLC for Pets introduced the vaccine in early November.  It is a two step injectable vaccine.

Should I vaccinate my pet?

TLC for Pets is currently recommending the vaccine for dogs with significant exposure to other dogs.  That includes dogs that spend time in boarding kennels, grooming facilities, daycare, and dog parks.  We are treating the vaccine as optional for lower risk dogs.

Does anybody require my dog to be vaccinated?

Several kennels in the area have made this a mandatory vaccine for boarding.

What if my dog needs to stay at TLC for Pets?

After December 1, 2009, TLC for Pets requires the vaccination for dogs staying in our boarding kennel.  We also highly recommend the vaccine prior to elective procedures.

Can I just get the vaccine when my dog boards?

Yes, but for maximum protection we recommend scheduling the vaccine in advance.
